Mangystau Peninsula sits on the northeastern shore of the Caspian Sea in western Kazakhstan. Once the floor of the ancient Tethys Ocean, this region is home to surreal chalk formations, deep canyons, underground mosques, and vast silence. Our overland expedition covers 1,200+ km in custom 4×4 vehicles, with camping under some of the darkest skies left on Earth.

Arrive in Aktau — the gateway to Mangystau, built on chalk cliffs above the Caspian Sea. After airport pickup and hotel check-in, gather for a welcome dinner on the waterfront. Your guide will brief the group on the route ahead.

Day 02Sherkala mountain

Sherkala & Yakshi Kala

Western Mangystau

Drive to Sherkala — the "Lion Fortress" — a massive limestone formation rising from the steppe. Continue to Yakshi Kala, an ancient fortress with walls dating to the 8th century.

Day 03Bozhyra canyon

Ustyurt Plateau

The crown jewel of Mangystau. Bozhyra is a colossal canyon of white chalk towers, some rising over 100 meters. The landscape resembles a lunar surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

The tour is rated Moderate. Daily hikes range from 1.5 to 3 hours on uneven, rocky, or sandy terrain. No technical climbing is required, but you should be comfortable walking 5–8 km per day.

The best months are April through October. April–May and September–October offer pleasant temperatures (15–25°C). July–August can reach 40°C+, but early starts and shaded camps make it manageable.

A detailed packing list is sent upon booking. Essentials: sturdy hiking boots, sun protection (hat, SPF 50+), layers for temperature swings, a headlamp, and a camera. We provide all camping gear.

Children aged 12+ with reasonable fitness can join. For families with younger children, we recommend the Private packages where the schedule can be adjusted.

You'll camp in 4-season tents on open terrain. We provide sleeping bags rated to -5°C, sleeping pads, and a mess tent with tables and chairs. Toilet tents are set up at every camp.

Expect no signal for 5–6 days. We carry a satellite phone for emergencies. This is your chance to fully disconnect.

Citizens of many countries (EU, UK, USA, Canada, Australia) can enter visa-free for up to 30 days. Check requirements at evisa.gov.kz.

Full refund (minus $150 admin fee) if cancelled 45+ days before departure. 50% refund for 30–44 days. No refund within 30 days. Travel insurance is strongly recommended.

Absolutely. Solo travelers and pairs are welcome on all Private packages. On Group Tours, we match you with other travelers — minimum 6 confirmed participants required to run.
